Excellent new Mic Pairs Perfectly with Voxie

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009
MityMic from TouchMic.com pairs perfectly to Voxie!

MityMic from TouchMic.com pairs perfectly to Voxie!

The guys at TouchMic.com have done it again. Another great product that works perfectly with Voxie on the iPod Touch 2nd Gen or 3G iPhone.

The MityMic is both cool looking and very functional. If you need to conduct interviews, record lectures/meetings or even take simple voice memos with minimal sound interference, then the MityMic is the perfect companion for your iPod Touch.

This mic plugs snugly into your iPod Touch’s 3.5mm jack (just snug enough allowing for a full 360 degree adjustment into any position). It’s designed as to extend away from the iPod Touch just enough as to not to pick up vibrations interference from base of the Touch.

A professional grade windscreen foam is included to protect your MityMic from excessive moisture. It helps to eliminate “pops” and noise at high volumes and windy environments. The gold plated 3.5mm jack allows for top-of-the-line signal transmission.

While the MityMic was designed for the 2nd Gen iPod Touch, you can also use it on your 3G iPhone (not original iPhone due to its recessed headphone jack). As this post explains, you don’t need an external mic if you have an iPhone, but it’s certainly worth considering if you do a lot of recording and are looking to squeeze out better quality. You should also consider their lapel mic if you’re recoding a lecture and want the mic to be close to your mouth for higher volume.

Don’t forget that you can use Voxie with your 1st Gen iPod Touch too, as explained by this post.

Voxie 2.0 is Here! Brings First-Ever Transcription to iPhone!

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Voxie 2.0 is now on the App Store. We accumulated all of our customers requests and ranked them by popularity. We included tweaks and feature additions to cover all of the most popular requests, and we’ll continue to add other features our customers request.

But the BIG NEWS is the addition of professional transcription, powered by Quicktate. This feature is just one more way that Voxie is differentiating itself from the competition. Voxie Transcriptions will convert your recordings to text by a professional staff 24 hours a day and quickly send to you or any number of recipients. There are many service plans with no commitment from light use to heavy commercial use including business letters, multiple speakers and legal transcription.

It’s really easy to use. Just record a message as you would normally do, but this time tap Transcribe and select if you want the transcribed text to be emailed back to you or to another recipient(s). You can literally dictate your emails, letters, notes to your friends or yourself. And, unlike other services, you’re not limited to 15 or 30 second mini-notes. You could dictate a complete letter.

The accuracy is excellent. Unlike “automated” services or cumbersome voice-recognition software, Voxie Transcriptions uses a professional staff based in the USA. You can give directions such as “Type this as a list”, and your pauses and “um’s” won’t be in the final message. This is an absolute requirement for business, legal and medical transcriptions. And now it’s available to everyone at an extremely low price. Plans start as low as $4.95!

Each owner of Voxie 2.0 can join the free trial to try the service out, and none of the plans come with a long term commitment. Try it out and you’ll wonder how you ever got along with out it!

More on the Voxie Transcription service here.

Do you Need a Mic to Record on your iPhone or iPod Touch?

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

TouchMic.com's Lapel Mic works on both iPhone and iPod Touch Second Gen

TouchMic.com's Lapel Mic works on both iPhone and iPod Touch Second Gen

Many of our Voxie customers contact us with questions about what microphone to use for what occasion or if they even need a mic for their iPhone or iPod Touch. Apps from Apple’s App Store run on the first and second generation iPod Touch and, of course, the iPhone. But they all have different recording hardware, or lack thereof. So, it’s actually quite complicated for the average iPhone or iPod toting customer to know exactly what they need.

So, here’s the answer:

iPhone (original and 3G): you’re all set. You have a built in mic located on the bottom of your iPhone. But you still may want to use an external mic for better quality or more pin-pointed accuracy. The earbuds that came with your iPhone have an integrated mic. But TouchMic.com has just released a new lapel mic (with headphone pass through) and MityMic (for 3G only) that are both very well designed and more suitable for professional situations. You won’t look very professional giving a speech to a group of people while wearing white headphones. Again, the mic is optional when you have an iPhone, but the TouchMic Producsts will come in handy depending on your needs.

iPod Touch Second Gen: sorry, no built in mic. But don’t worry, both Apple’s earbuds with integrated mic and TouchMic.com’s lapel mic and MityMic work great. The Second Gen iPod’s audio input is integrated into the headphone jack, just like the iPhone.

iPod Touch First Gen: again, no mic. But never fear, MacAlly is here. We have another blog post dedicated to just this topic. But the short story is that TouchMic.com sells the MacAlly mics that work the best on your faithful First Gen iPod. We’ve tested both the iVoice Pro and iVoice III. The First Gen iPod’s audio input is integrated into the dock connector, not the headphone jack. This is where most people get confused. And there are a lot of dock connector mics made for the original iPod and Nano that don’t work on the iPod Touch. To be safe, so shop wisely if you choose not to buy the one we have tested.

Note that the above applies to our recording app Voxie for sure. The iPod Touch information may not apply to other recording apps as most aren’t compatible with the iPod Touch. But Voxie is. Or did we say that already? ;-)

Personalize your Ringtones with Voxie

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

I’m always amazed by the number of unconventional and creative ways people find to use Voxie, and I’m happy to finally contribute one of my own! I was a little behind the curve in getting my iPhone so I relied on the experience of seasoned users to get me up to speed in the beginning. After about a week into getting everything almost completely personalized, I still faced one hanging dilemma – what about ringtones? Now maybe not everyone has the enthusiasm as I do for personalization but I’d rather not have to whip out my phone every time I hear a generic ring in a public place. Also, I can be frugal at times and didn’t want to spend an extra dollar when I had already purchased the song. I don’t call that cheap, I call that smart.

I decided to do a little R&D work and look into the matter where I discovered it’s much simpler than expected. On top of that, it’s completely Mac supported, which means that Apple isn’t going to come down on you if you do an update. Thanks to the tips from The Apple Blog fascistic how-to guide, I can now create any ringtone I want. Not just using songs, but using audio I recorded from Voxie!

There are a few ways you can do it, but I’ll try to be as basic about it as possible. My process use a Mac with GarageBand, but there is a round-about way of doing it on a PC thanks to CyberNet’s easy guide.

Here’s How Make a Ringtone from a Voxie Recording:

  1. Capture your audio on Voxie.
  2. Use Voxie’s Wifi Sync to transfer to your computer
  3.  Open both Garage Band and iTunes
  4. Drag your audio file to Garage Band
  5. Find the part in the audio that you want used (it can’t be more than 40 seconds – I’ve tried). I generally cut the audio so that I can use it like a book mark. To cut the audio, be sure you select it and then press Apple+T.
  6. Once you’ve identified what part of the clip you want to use, click on the Apple Loop button, located at the bottom of Garage Band (it’s to the right of the fast forward button and left of the time display).
  7. You’ll then see a small bar right above the audio. You can move it to any part of the audio file and drag it to make the time longer. Only the area the bar is under will be what’s in your ringtone.
  8. Go to Share and select Send Ringtone to iTunes
  9. It will automatically show up in your ringtones folder

*Note, if it says that your selection is longer than 40 seconds and you think you’ve done your math right, be sure that you’re using the time indicator rather than the measures indicator.

If only I had this as a kid! I remember when I first got a recorder, I went around recording all sorts of funny sounds. I guess it’s a good excuse to behave like a kid again. With the ability to set custom tones per person, you can use people’s own voice as their ringer! Grab a ringtone of your boss yelling, your specially some one whispering sweet nothings, or any random phrase that fits your caller!

Power to the iPod First Gen’ers – Voxie Goes Old School

Friday, December 12th, 2008

That’s right, Voxie works on the First Generation iPod Touch. You can thank two of our customers who tested this and helped make this happen. Thanks Shaun and Skatt.

What will you need:
1. The 2.2 firmware update.
2. A compatible mic (this is the important part as most aren’t compatible)

The “Audio In” on the iPod Touch First Gen is in the dock connector and NOT in the headphone jack. It acts more like a normal iPod than a 2nd Gen iPod or iPhone. So, dock connector mics are the only ones that will work, but some may not work. To be clear, the Apple earbuds with integrated mic that comes with the iPhone will not work.

Please help us come up with a complete list of mic’s by responding to this post with your comments and experience in getting the iPod First Gen to work with Voxie. So far we have been told by customers that will work:

Macally iVoice III
Macally iVoicePro
Both are sold at many online retailers and also at TouchMic.com.

And customers have told us these do NOT work or has some issues:
Griffin iTalk Pro (also not listed as compatible with 1G Touch)
Belkin TuneTalk (see user comments on this post as there has been some issues using this one)

Note that the manufacturer of the mic might not even know it works for this application. This is something our customers helped us figure out.

But we’re certain a lot more mics will work just fine. So try yours and post a comment letting everyone know what works.

This is great for First Gen iPod Touch owners. Thanks Apple!

The Best Just Got Better – Voxie v1.5

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Here’s your 411 to the Party!

I know we’re all used to celebrating birthdays measured in whole numbers, but this is software, and decimals and dots are just part of the game. You may be asking “HOW did Voxie go from 1.0 to 1.5 so fast”. For us to explain that, you’d just have to stop by the office one day and we’ll show you the pizza boxes and pile of empty Dr. Pepper cans. One look and you’ll say “oh, so that’s what people mean when they say all-nighter”.

Voxie 1.5 actually took a lot of all-nighters but it was well worth the effort. This may then lead you to ask “WHY the self induced maniacal pace to bring about the newest update?” That’s easy. You’ve likely read or heck…even heard us (if you’re fortunate enough to be anywhere near a Bottle Rocket fancier) boast that Voxie is the quintessential voice recorder, the recorder that defines recording, the recorder that will make you more appealing to the opposite sex.  Wait…nix that last claim, although we still maintain, however unverified, that you’ll be sexy…er with Voxie than without.

We don’t make these assertions lightly and we’re readily prepared to uphold our position.  After the initial launch of Voxie, we realized that one of the only features missing from 1.0 was Wi-Fi Sync.  So, only one week after Voxie’s debut, she’s already turning 1.5.  Growing older also means growing wiser so here’s what else maturity has brought:

  • WiFi Sync - easily transfers large or small files to your computer wirelessly which you can then import into your iTunes.
  • Remote Listen - connect wirelessly to Voxie from your Mac or PC to listen to your recording before copying them.
  • Expanded Email Support - email up to 5MB or use handy WiFi Sync for larger files
  • Improve Stability - a little less fickle because they say you settle down with age
  • Improved User Interface - we’ve made it even easier and more enjoyable to use

Now that we’ve got you all psyched about all the new features, you’re no doubt asking “WHEN does this party start?”  It’s already started – there’s absolutely no wait, there’s absolutely no lines!  We hope that all the Voxie users out there (and we’re thankful that there are so many of you) enjoy the new features. And to those who aren’t Voxie users yet, this might be the perfect time to head on over to the App Store and check it out, which answers the WHERE. Enjoy!

Announcing Voxie!

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

You heard it here first!  Voxie just hit the app store and it’s more than your run-of-the mill voice recorder…oh much more!  Unlike those other drab ordinary Plain Jane recording apps, Voxie is S-E-X-Y.  We’ve previously lauded all it’s great functionality but we know that sheer utility is not enough!  A man (or woman) cannot subsist on bread alone…you need panache, you need allure, you NEED Voxie!

Get it on the App Store or learn more at http://www.bottlerocketapps.com/#/voxie/

Voxie UI completed and in Beta!

Friday, October 10th, 2008

We’ve definitely put in a lot of love and labor into the app and I think you’ll be happy with the end result. There’s no shortage of voice recording apps out there but none of them have impressed me nearly as much as Voxie has.  There are a few that nearly came close…nearly, but I really think this one has it all.  Here’s a sneak peek of what’s to come.

We’ve invested a substantial amount of time on the interface design so it looks as good as it performs.  My favorite attributes are probably the simplest – the Express and Settings features.  When you’re completely on the go, like driving in a car, you don’t want the rigmarole of searching or pressing a sequence of buttons.  We created an Express feature that you either touch twice anywhere on the screen or shake it to start recording and repeat to stop.  (I definitely have too much fun shaking my iPhone!)  It will automatically save or send to a designated address.

The Settings too are very well thought out.  It allows you to customize Voxie to your preference.  Since I’m always on the go, I’ve set up the Express mode to execute on application launch.  I prefer to keep my recordings saved locally so I can access it anytime, anywhere.  It completely compliments my transient lifestyle and since the recording is intended only for me, I keep the audio quality low (8kHz) to save on storage space but there is the option of setting it to Medium (16kHz) or High (24kHz) for better quality.  The other setting option that just blows me out of the water is the ability to change wallpapers.  I’m a girl and I’m sick of all the masculine skewed utility aesthetics that saturate the market. Voxie has a diverse selection of backgrounds that lets me personalize the appearance to suit my feminine taste.

Those just highlight my favorites but there’s a plethora of other robust functions in Voxie. The “standard” recording mode is loaded with features from speaker mode, and priority flagging, to the ability to label, categorize and organize. You’ll find many other hidden gems in this app but I think we should let it let it “speak” for itself.

Coming very soon to the iPhone App Store…
