iPhone game of the day: Doodle Bomb

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

Almost a year after its initial launch, Doodle Bomb is still receiving great reviews. On October 13, 2010, GamesRadar named Doodle Bomb the “iPhone Game of the Day” based on its cute interface but also surprisingly deep, in a sort of “exploding mouse trap” kind of way.

Appolicious Names Doodle Bomb “One of the Five Best Doodle Games of the Year”

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Mobile app review site Appolicious has honored Bottle Rocket’s Doodle Bomb as one of the Five Best Doodle Games of the Year.

In its review, Appolicious says that Doodle Bomb  “is surprisingly difficult…. There are 65 levels in all, and your goal is to open doors by bombing various switches. Of course, there’s a lot more to it than that. You encounter guards who will shoot your bomb before it gets to its intended target and, at times, you’ll have to utilize anti-gravity switches and roll bombs on ceilings to complete the level. You control your bombs by simply tapping an area on the screen and, once it’s landed, by tilting your device to roll the bomb left or right.”  The author goes on to warn–and we’ve heard this same lament from hundreds of addicted Doodle Bomb users–”just be prepared to devote some time to this gem”.

Doodle Bomb is one of Bottle Rocket’s most popular iPhone games ever, with more than 500,000 downloads to date.   MacWorld gave Doodle Bomb its Editors Choice Award and rated it “5 Stars”, and Apple has recognized Doodle Bomb many times, most recently in July 2010 as one of the “Best Doodle Games”.

If you haven’t tried Doodle Bomb yet, what are you waiting for?  Download this famous physics puzzler today from the App Store, and join the fight today!

Wings Galaxy Available Now!

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

One of the most complicated apps we’ve ever released. Trust us, we have the bags under our eyes to prove it.

What our beta testers said:

“Every once in a while a game comes along that really impresses you. Wings Galaxy is that game.”

“I really like the graphics.”

“After playing Wings Earth, I was really hoping you would make a space exploration game.”

“One of the few games I can actually play more than once and still have fun.”

“If you sell this for less than five bucks, this will be the best value on the App Store.”

“Finally a game that’s not another bad port from a game console. This is so much better.”

“Challenging enough to keep me interested, but not impossible to master.”

Wings Galaxy takes the Wings apps to a whole new level with substantially greater game content enhanced by a rich custom music score intended to evoke a completely immersive intergalactic experience. Players will be dazzled with minute attention to details embedded in every aspect of game from the splendid graphics and effects to the expanded exploration grid and mission objectives. Earn your badge as a bona-fide Space Cowboy as you navigate treacherous asteroids and initiate hyper-space jump drives in your efforts to mine Trillium and rescue distressed ships… Ready to come aboard? Wings Galaxy Sneak Peek!

Monday, June 1st, 2009

OMG! Wings Galaxy is finally done! One of the most complex and exciting projects we have ever undertaken has been submitted to Apple for the infamous app review process.

We’ve worked very hard on Wings Galaxy and hope you’re excited about the next chapter in one of the most successful iPhone app franchises on the App Store. Like Wings 2 (Earth), Wings Galaxy will not be a copy-cat first person shooter or pixelated port. It will not be another game that you play and dispose of in a day or two. We have tried to preserve the beautiful, relaxing and simple nature of Wings, while adding purpose and goals for those seeking a little more of a challenge.

So, what’s the goal? Do you capture another planet, are you running from an enemy, are you a deep space junk trader? We’re not telling. In fact, that’s part of the fun – discovering how to play and what to do. We’ll show you how to control your ship, and that’s about it. You figure the rest out on your own in the open-ended 4 galaxies you can explore.

Seek and Spell is Bottle Rocket Approved!

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

I know, I know, why would we tell everyone to go buy another company’s iPhone app? Especially one made by one of our competitors, Retronyms makers of Recorder and competitor to Voxie Pro Recorder. First off Voxie and Recorder are two different apps that appeal to different types of customers. And second, we’re friends with the guys at Retronyms and love their new app Seek and Spell.

On a recent trip to California to visit Apple to show them some new projects, we had a chance to grab coffee (and I think a orange-cranberry scone was involved) with Dan and Bob of Retronyms. We had a great time telling App Store war stories and sharing ideas.

Then we headed over to a park near the Embarcadero where we whipped out our iPhones and conjoured up a game of Seek and Spell. At first I was a little skeptical. Sure it was a novel idea, running around looking at your iPhone while trying not to slam into a tree. But I had no idea how fun and engaging this was going to be.

It was awesome!

First, I finally got a little exercise that I’ve been meaning to do for about 20 years. But the real fun was the immediate rush of adreneline that comes over you once the game begins. I absolutely loved how the experience was “outside the iPhone”. Seek and Spell isn’t just an app, it’s an experience. A real one, not a fantasy world seen through a 320×480 window.

I found myself jumping over bushes, ducking behind buildings, calculating what letters I should go for first (yes, there is a lot of strategy to this game if you want to take it that far) and regretting eating that before-mentioned scone.

All I can say is, you and at least one friend need to go download Seek and Spell to see what I mean. It’s awesome, and our hat is off to our friends at Retronyms. Kudos gentlemen (and lady). We’ll be back soon for a rematch. This time it’s gonna be a smack down. We’ve been practicing.

Ask for a Kiss and you might get a Slap!

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Ok everyone, it’s time to just chill and have some fun. Sure you know us for high-flying apps like Wings 2.0 or super-functional apps like Overnight and Voxie. But we like to relax and just have some fun too.

Mistletoe is our latest contribution to this year’s collection of holiday apps. It joins Santa Wings and Voice Cards-Seasons Greetings (still waiting for Apple to give the nod) as our “triptych” of holiday apps.

It’s just 99 cents. Are there other mistletoe apps out there? Yep, quite a few actually. But we like ours best. Let us know what you think.

Wave Mistletoe above your head at the next holiday party, ask for a kiss and see what you get. Mistletoe will keep your score, kisses vs. slaps, while it rewards you with sound effects and professionally rendered “animated” images of mistletoe.

Just something fun to pass the time, and our way of saying Happy Holiday Everyone!

You’ve Spoken and We’re listening. Wings v2.0 coming soon!

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Since the release of Wings, many of you have written to us words of encouragement, advice and critiques. Wings placed us in new territory as our first app so we can’t tell you how much we appreciate the ongoing interaction with our users and the productive feedback you’ve provided. One of the most frequent comment we’ve received is that Wings doesn’t feel game-like enough – you really don’t have much flight control or suffer any consequences in game play. While we initially intended Wings to be more of a relaxation inducer and less of a high energy flight simulator, we also want to address the suggestions of our users. Wings v2.0 will do just that. You’ll find greater control options, improved game play interaction and more appealing visuals. We believe then that you’ll be as excited as we are about some of the key features that are coming to v2.0.

  • Menu UI Improvements: You’ll first notice some visual changes – a cooler, sleeker look and improvements to the user interface overall.
  • New Terrains: We’ve updated all stages with four amazing new terrains to explore.
  • Flight Control: Tap the screen while flying to access the new flight controls. You can then pause, return to main menu or control flight speed by moving the throttle.
  • Interactive Gameplay Feedback: Apparently flying without consequence is more distressing than the fear of crashing. Many of you asked for the ability to crash or sustain damage, so when crashing on the ground, the screen will now shake the back and forth (like a jostle effect) and show the screen to be “cracked” accompanied by breaking glass noise. Damage glass will fade once flight commences as not to add too much ‘distressing’.

There will be some other “surprises” to discover as we continue working to keep Wings fresh and compelling – so keep those comments coming. If you’d like to see something, let us know through our poll or comment below. We always love hearing from you!

Wings Soars to Top 10 Paid Apps!

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

With Wings being our first app to hit the iPhone store, we really didn’t really know what to anticipate. Sure, WE believe we’ve created an awesome little app. We hoped and preyed that the mobile community would share in our enthusiasm but we’re not going to say that it wasn’t without trepidation that we released our new fledging out into the iTunes wilderness.

Wowzers! The response has been unbelievable! Even surpassing heavy competition like X-plane, Wings reached Top 10 Paid iPhone apps in only it’s first week of release. We’re about as deliriously high as our app and it certainly reinforces our mission to continue to create elegant, functional apps without compromise. Stick around and see what new heights we ascend to…

Haven’t tried Wings yet? Snag it on the iTunes App Store or learn more about it at http://www.bottlerocketapps.com/#/wings/
