Sea Shepherd: April 2011 Charity of the Month

Established in 1977, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization whose mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species.  Since the early days, Sea Shepherd has embarked on over 200 voyages covering many of the world's oceans and defending and saving defenseless marine life all along the way.  Bottle Rocket has selected Sea Shepherd as our featured charity for April, and Calvin Carter, our Founder & President shares why:

"Some call these guys wreckless, but it takes focus, commitment and enormous passion to put your life second to the lives of others... especially defenseless animals like dolphins, whales, and seals. We have to have these kinds of groups willing to ride the edge, so we know that the edge is still there.

After decades of conventions and talks and treaties, highly funded and resourceful ships continue to track down and kill their prey.  Since we don't seem to be able to stop them, Sea Shepherd goes as far as they can without harming humans.  I'm happy the work we do at Bottle Rocket can help, in some small way, take a stand for these animals."

Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately-balanced ocean ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations.
