What We Learned at SXSW Interactive!

Last month, a group of Bottle Rocket team members loaded a bus in route to Austin, Texas to see what South by Southwest (SXSW) was all about.  SXSW, a set of film, interactive and music festivals, takes place annually in Austin and dates back to 1987. Since SXSW Interactive split off as an event of its own in 1999, it has built a reputation as the breeding ground for new ideas and creative technologies. Hence, why the Rocketeers were inclined to check it out!

Here is a brief recap of what was learned, and in some cases confirmed, by the Rocketeers. These are trends and general directions that impact the app space, as well as digital and marketing more broadly.

  • Rise of the Ambient Device – the notion that mobile technology can sense the environment around the user and push relevant, commonly location specific, information without action by the user
  • Reducing Complexity, Simplify – the trend of simplified user experience is on the rise, Instagram is a great example of this
  • You, Better – the concept of a mobile device bettering the user and enhancing the way we live our lives
  • The Interface Evolved – the idea of a vanishing interface that relies on gestures and design instead of familiar buttons and controls
  • Skeuomorphic vs. Superhuman – using these trends to uniquely enhance the experience of the users

To read the complete list of trends, and see a more thorough explanation of the above, click here. The way we see it… the more knowledge we share, the further we can push the app industry and technologies together. We look forward to seeing you at next year’s SXSW Interactive. It has all the potential to be bigger, better and more Interactive than years past!

58 North launches one-of-a-kind app, developed by Bottle Rocket… Pholium!

58 North is proud to announce the launch of Pholium, a photo enthusiast's dream e-book creation app. To date, Pholium, developed by Bottle Rocket Apps, is the only app that allows you to create, edit, publish and share your photo e-book all from within the app on the iPad!

This one-of-a-kind app contains three main areas – the Gallery, the Studio and the Library. All of the images on the user’s iPad are available for import into the Gallery. Once in the app, the images can be edited with controls that adjust size, brightness, contrast, exposure, and creative options (black & white, sepia, etc.). You also have the option to organize and name your images in stacks for easy identification.

Next, the Studio is where the user can see the possibilities begin to unfold as their e-book comes to life. In this stage, you can personalize the cover, determining the layout for each page, freely rotate images 360 degrees, layer images on top of one another and so much more!

Once complete, your e-book is ready to be saved to the Library. There is no limit to the number of e-books you can create for free - so have it! Plus, when you are ready to share your creation with others, the app allows you to send each e-book to up to 10 recipients wirelessly using Pholium’s cloud server. After the first 10, you may purchase additional shares for $0.99, allowing you to send your e-book to 10 more recipients. The end result is a high-quality photo e-book, complete with page curling and iPad optimized image viewing, for you and your friends!

Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts – Music Guild: Our March Charity of the Month

Jeff Johnson, our Controller here at Bottle Rocket, chose the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts - Music Guild because of its dedication to enhancing the music learning experience of its students, one of whom is his son.

Booker T. Washington is an excellent school, filled with amazingly talented young people, who give their time and talents to make the school the pride of Dallas, as well as the entire State of Texas. In addition to their many academic awards, Booker T. musicians have gained individual and collective recognition on the local, regional, and national music scenes.

Since 1983, Booker T. Washington's musicians have won 221 music awards. The Varsity String Orchestra has earned many of those musical awards. In addition to receiving straight superior ratings at the University Interscholastic League concert and sight-reading contests for the past six straight years, the judges in last spring’s UIL contest heralded the orchestra’s performance as “truly superior” and noted that the orchestra was “full of talented and skilled young musicians” with a “high degree of musical maturity and prowess.”

Indeed, it was the group’s performance at the UIL regional contest in March that earned them the coveted invitation to Carnegie Hall. Our donation will specifically go towards the Varsity String Orchestra’s goal to raise $70,000 to cover the cost of transportation, accommodations and other expenses associated with their summer performance at Carnegie Hall.
